Philip Morris International donates E1.8 million for vulnerable groups' housing

BHAHWINI - The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla has extended her deepest appreciation to Philip Morris International for their generous donation of US$100 000 (approximately E1.8million) towards the reconstruction and recovery of decent houses for vulnerable groups. 

The DPM said the funds received have made a tremendous difference to the families affected by the recent months windstorms across the country.

She was addressing a high-powered delegation led by Vice President of Phillip Morris International Christos Herpantidis at Maseyisini Inkhundla before visiting one of the beneficiaries, Sifundvo at Mzizi community.

“With these resources, we have been able to rebuild hope and restore dignity to our citizens. A total of 20 decent houses all over the country were constructed, providing safety and security to the most vulnerable families,” the DPM said. 

Through this funding, two neighbourhood care points (NCPs) were also constructed, and it is providing nutritious meals to over 80 children in need. 

The DPM said when the country was affected by the devastating storm on December 8, 2023, they contacted Phillip Morris International for assistance and few days later, a sum of US$100 000 was deposited in National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) account. 

In his address, Christos Herpantidis, said his organization has an obligation of giving back to those in need in communities.

“We have opened our hands and hearts whenever there is a need and we can offer some help, we promise to be there,” Herpantidis pledged. 

He was accompanied by Vice President, Public Affairs Nevena Crljenko, Director External Affairs Sub-Saharan Africa - Goekhan Aladag, Director External Affairs and International Policy Sub-Saharan Africa - Ez Mazou and Global Engagement Consultant Richard Griffiths. 

The delegation then proceeded to Mzizi community, where they witness a transformation, where Sifundvo Mazibuko and his sister Thembisile were provided with a decent shelter, makeshift kitchen, toilet through Phillip Morris Foundation and the DPM’s Office provided three goats, indigenous chickens and fencing.
