Smart City, 5G Network fitting King’s gift

Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has described the newly completed Mbabane Smart City and 5G Network Project as a “perfect 57th birthday gift” for His Majesty King Mswati III.

The E38 million initiative, supported by the Republic of China (Taiwan), was officially handed over this morning at the Mbabane Municipal Council.

The landmark project includes a state-of-the-art control centre and advanced real-time surveillance infrastructure, designed to significantly improve urban management and public safety. According to the Prime Minister, similar systems are planned for rollout in other towns including Manzini, Matsapha, Nhlangano, and Siteki.

“This achievement is a proud outcome of the long-standing and fruitful partnership between the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of China (Taiwan),” the Prime Minister said.

“Today, just 12 months since the project was commissioned at Hilton Garden Inn on 14 May 2024, we stand in celebration of its successful completion, fully aligned with the ‘Nkwe’ directive by His Majesty King Mswati III.”

The PM praised Taiwan’s continued support for Eswatini’s development agenda, particularly in aligning with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“We are especially inspired by the way Taiwan has embraced and supported our national vision of becoming a digitally empowered society,” he said. “With the deployment of this 5G network – offering unprecedented speed, reliability, and capacity – we are laying a solid foundation for real-time data processing and connectivity, which are essential components for any smart society.”

The innovations, he noted, will also enhance public safety, with additional plans including water and weather sensors along the Mbabane River and the provision of free public Wi-Fi to broaden digital inclusion and boost disaster preparedness.

“This moment is even more special as it coincides with His Majesty’s 57th birthday celebration,” the PM said. “Of all the gifts he may receive, this one – symbolising innovation, progress, and shared vision – will surely stand out. To that, we say: Bayethe, Wena Waphakathi. Lunwele Loludze, Wena Wekunene.”

He concluded by urging the nation to carry forward the spirit of collaboration: “Let this moment remind us of what is possible when we work together in the spirit of Nkwe. Let us carry this energy into every ministry, every project, and every region, to transform our Kingdom into the thriving digital Nation we all envision.”
